Default What do you remember about your grammar school library?

I was speaking with a librarian and it made me think of what I remembered.

How I would drag my feet on the carpet in order to shock them with static electricity and the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

How we used to huddle in the corner and look at "bad" books, ie sex/health books!!!
My husband and I were just talking about our library experiences when we were kids...
I also remember our librarian reading stories to us and helping us pick out books!
I also remember we were allowed to watch TV during our library time when the challenger went down!

I looooved the library at school and in our community!

Well, my first grammer school had the library in the basement so it was kind of creepy... Then it was in the middle of the school at my second, that was more fun. I was big on biographies (still am) and Little House on the Prarie and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe series, and The Black Cauldron series, and... I was a little book worm.

We had to be escorted to the library, and those that got to work there were considered quite special. (I was not that special.) Anyway, the librarian was friends with Madeline L'Engle, and she got a few of us signed books. Some people got to meet the author. We also had a bookmark contest, which I won. I drew something from A Swiftly Tilting Planet.

I remember half the library looking like a classroom, and the other half being the library. I remember it being pretty small, even to a kid.

There were no comfy chairs.

I remember being THROWN OUT of my public library at age eight because I had my feet up on the big comfy leather chair in the adult section. The next time I set foot in a public library (other than the microfilm room of Boston Public in college) was when I interviewed to be a library director. (Wierdly, I got the job!)
