From the author of The Ugly Dachshund, this forgotten classic, originally published in 1949 in the UK and US, is being given a new life. This charming fable of animal life in the Meadow has a most interesting cast of animals and humans, known as Legs. A duckling, dissatisfied with being one of eleven other black ducklings, gets the notion that he is actually a swan. Other animal characters include a small misunderstood cat, a goose of decided literary bent, and a poor brown hen, used as a surrogate mother for the ducklings, who is unable to figure out how her chicks became web-footed. The Legs add to the cacophony of barnyard life during a long hot summer in the middle of World War II, worrying over rations and deciding which of their feathered creatures will have the misfortune of becoming dinner. Modern readers will find Miss Sterns offbeat humor, originality, and wisdom to have a timeless quality. British author Gladys Stern wrote over forty novels, several plays, short stories and biographies from the 1930s until her death in 1973. |
